Duncan Prints

Leah Logo

Austin-based Leah Duncan was a designer in the agency world as well as for silkscreening companies before deciding she wanted to make a living doing what she loved: surface design. “inspired by a love of nature, her east austin neighborhood, the southwest, and her cherokee roots she has established a recognizable voice that speaks simplicity and beauty with quirky and organic themes.” Today, she sells her quirky, folk-meets-modern textiles & prints in both her Etsy shop and retail boutiques, while also picking up coveted commissions from the likes of Target, Land of Nod and Urban Outfitters. (As always, click to shop!)

Dan 300 * Logo

Dan300 is an Australian company that produces a range of products, from textiles to stationery, all with a moderns sensibility and passion for color and pattern. Designer & Director Daniella (Dani) Rosen tells a wonderful tale of the earliest days of her company:

The name derived from the number plates on my old 1981 peppermint green car saw me live out my ‘dream’ of having a company car. Yes, the company car came before the business idea. On a dare, I registered the business name DAN300 designs and then set out to work out what in fact I was going to make/sell. With several years of retail & product experience up my sleeve, I followed through on starting my own business right from my bedroom floor. It is one of those stories where the first sample was glued together on the floor of my rented apartment in Sydney, I showed it to a friend of a friend who worked in a shop subsequently leading to a job offer from that shop and then eventually stocking the shop where I worked and I guess the rest is history…

Totally inspired. (As always, click to shop!)

Meandering Through Merci

Merci

Snapped a few pics while browsing Merci in Paris a couple weeks ago. Merci is a tony, yet earthy shop that boasts an eclectic array of housewares, stationery, clothing, furnishings, books and perfumes. It’s quite special: all of the profits go to charity (specifically, a foundation that helps underprivileged women and children by providing them with skills they can use to improve their quality of life). And, handily, they also ship to the US.

All Cooped Up

When modern meets organic, my heart goes all a flutter and my check card ultimately leaps out. I just can’t help myself. Enter Dinah Coops, a Seattle-based designer whose sensibility simply sends me over the edge. Her line of “naturally modern sustainable” products is deeply authentic, playfully sophisticated and refreshingly simple. Naturally, love at first sight. She offers a small and quietly edited collection of coasters, artwork, table linens, tablemats, t-shirts and jewelry, made locally in the Pacific Northwest from recycled and sustainable materials. As always, click the image for details or to purchase.

Pikku Wares

In honor of the the final day of the National Stationery Show in NYC, I thought I’d share one of my all time favorites. Pikku is a brilliant line of charming textiles and stationery products by designer Valerie Ormiston. I adore that in a world of constant change and the urge to reinvent, her wares evolve at a snail’s pace – and stand the test of time. Simple, modern, unpretentious and happy.  (As always, click to shop!)

Lara Scobie Ceramics

I’ve got a perpetual love affair going on with ceramics – and am nuts for print + pattern, especially when it has a modern-organic sensibility. So, you can only imagine how deeply smitten I became when I first saw the stunning work of Lara Scobie. A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, Lara has been making ceramics for over 20 years.

“Lara Scobie’s current work is predominantly concerned with the dynamic interplay between form and pattern. This is explored through the cohesive integration of drawing, surface mark making and volume. She is equally interested in the space that surrounds pattern as much as the hue and texture of the decorated surface.”

Paula Greif Ceramics

Paula Greif Ceramics logo

Paula Greif is a NYC-based ceramic artist who was originally trained as a graphic designer. Her enviable and varied career began in the art department at Rolling Stone, followed by stints at Mademoiselle and Barneys NY, after which she turned to making rock videos for the likes of the Smiths. It wasn’t until later in life that she decided to take a pottery class with the intent of “remaking everything in her kitchen”. These days. she hand-makes small batch ceramics (only about a dozen of each design) of things she finds useful and beautiful. Indeed. (As always, click to shop!)

Minneapolis Retail Tour – Part One

Budget tightening meant that one of our spring trend trips was cancelled this year. So, in an attempt to brew some lemonade out of those lemons, we decided to embark on a 2-day intensive shopping excursion in our own back yard; treating the experience just as we would if we were actually exploring a new, uncharted city. So with those fresh eyes, we took to the streets of Minneapolis on a voyage of discovery. While we made space to check out the “usual suspects”, we also ventured off the beaten path to new shops and places we don’t ordinarily go. I must say, the experience proved totally inspiring and reminded me what an incredibly vibrant retail scene we have right here!

It’s a Date!

Yes, I know. I have a calendar on my phone. And Outlook keeps me constantly reminded of where I’m supposed to be, when. But I’m a fool for paper, so I still insist on having non-electronic versions to keep me company.
