In these wintery, bleh days, one needs a jolt of color, no? In times like these, I like to explore the blog, Love Print Studio, who always seems to have gorgeous collages to tempt my palette (see what I did there?).
This video does a pretty good job of describing how familiarity + surprise combine to create trends people want in on.
Although trends might seem completely random, there are well-documented patterns to what becomes popular. A 20th century industrial designer, who created some of America’s most iconic looks, developed a theory of coolness that has been backed up by various scientific studies. Derek Thompson, senior editor at The Atlantic, explains the science behind why we like what we like.
So there it is… Purple. Okay, fancy purple. Purple about which they penned:
Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.
So, there’s that. Except… I dunno. I think of purple as being for Unicorns and my 10-year old niece’s new bedding, and gypsies’ scarves, and grape popsicles. Do I really want a purple couch? If I think about it – do I really want purple a n y t h i n g ?
So I’ve done a bit of soul searching. And while I’m still squarely in the skeptic box, I’m opening my mind a tad.
