Inaluxe is an independent art studio in Australia, that combines the talents of fine artists Kristina Sostarko and Jason Odd. They create graphic, mid-century-inspired prints using archival fine art papers and giclee reproduction print technology.

Our philosophy is simple: Be passionate about the creative process, use the best materials possible, and be responsible and sustainable in production practice.

It’s A Sign

What a fun discovery! Sidney-based Michael Pederson creates mischievious and irreverent street art that pops up around town – to what I must imagine is both the delight and bewilderment of the public lucky enough to stumble upon it.

“I like the idea of interfering with the overly familiar background blur … Ideally with something a passerby might see out of the corner of an eye.”

Crazy for Castle

1 logo-sm

Founded in 2008 by designer Rachel Castle, the Aussie homewares brand Castle has become a haven for lovers of all things sunny. Cotton bedlinens are made and handprinted in Australia; artworks all sewn, screened and painted by the designer herself. Brilliantly colorful, irreverent and playfully modern.

CASTLE loves having a bit of fun. We love color and whimsy. We love making accessible art and beautiful bedlinens. We love spots and fluro and grey and yellow and love hearts and flowers and paint and felt and everything that POPS around in our studio. If its fun, we love it.

Dan 300 * Logo

Dan300 is an Australian company that produces a range of products, from textiles to stationery, all with a moderns sensibility and passion for color and pattern. Designer & Director Daniella (Dani) Rosen tells a wonderful tale of the earliest days of her company:

The name derived from the number plates on my old 1981 peppermint green car saw me live out my ‘dream’ of having a company car. Yes, the company car came before the business idea. On a dare, I registered the business name DAN300 designs and then set out to work out what in fact I was going to make/sell. With several years of retail & product experience up my sleeve, I followed through on starting my own business right from my bedroom floor. It is one of those stories where the first sample was glued together on the floor of my rented apartment in Sydney, I showed it to a friend of a friend who worked in a shop subsequently leading to a job offer from that shop and then eventually stocking the shop where I worked and I guess the rest is history…

Totally inspired. (As always, click to shop!)

Southwood Home is a Melbourne-based furniture and homewares store that focuses on local, natural, organic and fair trade products. They carry a lot of fabulous local brands like Ample, Armadillo, Bemboka, Bonnie & Neil, Skin & Threads, Tide and Uimi as well as international brands like Amy Sia, Imogen Heath and Hey Sign. I adore their modern, optimistic sensibility, punctuated with playful colors and simple forms.

Today’s Track – Little Man, Sia

Sia’s one of my all time favorites, so I couldn’t resist sharing this oft overlooked track today. Quiet and catchy with a nice dose of soul… Little Man by Sia from the album Healing is Difficult, 2003.

Design That Works

I’m totally digging this “brand renewal” by Australian design firm Designworks. Created for the Benevolent Society, an Australian charity with a mission to “achieve lasting social change in society through building strong families and healthy communities”, it exudes a spunky, colorful exuberance that’s refreshing to see in today’s brand landscape.

“The basic idea is that when people come together change happens. In the wordmark letters are linked like a chain and their overlaying parts portray these moments of effective change. The colour system navigates through five brand pillars ‘Hope’, ‘Wisdom’, ‘Strength’, ‘Belonging’ and ‘Love’ while supergraphics create striking visuals.”

Maker’s Mark

YS ink drawing FACE

I’m currently obsessed with products that unabashedly showcase and celebrate the hand of the maker. Imperfect forms, inconsistent colorations, no two exactly the same… Beautifully elegant pieces by skilled artists. A great example is the work of Anthea Carboni of Australia’s Yuniko Studio. Handmade in her Perth studio, these ceramics are both functional + soulful bits of art.

(She does not offer all styles on-line, but does have an edited collection available on her Etsy shop. She also considers special orders and, yes, she ships to the States.)
