On a cold, gray day like this one, I’m needing a jolt of the earthy yet whimsical work of Lisa Neimeth. Creating her pieces of functional art in a converted chicken coop right in the middle on San Francisco, she captures the spirit of craft-made-modern.
Have you ever had that moment when you look around your house and it becomes painfully obvious that many of your decor statements – that, at the time of purchase you assumed would be timelessly modern – well… aren’t? I’m having that crisis of confidence when it comes to a few of the decade-old rugs I am currently co-habitating with, and have begun the mission to repent and replace. Here are a few of my favorites under consideration – though I make no guarantees they will stand the test of time; only that they’d be jolly good right now.
As part of my new job, I actually have to go “experience” a black Friday in action – live and in person. This is distressing to me, as I am a decidedly foul morning person and am significantly more likely to go to sleep at 4am than wake up at that time. Besides, I deliberately try to be less so compelled to buy products because they’re a good deal (anyone else have a closet full of “good deals” – unworn and with the tags still on them?), and more so because I love and adore them. So, my ode to Black Friday is simply a menagerie of lovely things… in black. And to those of you braving the crowds today – good luck and Godspeed.

Corporate partnerships with design houses are nothing new, but I can’t help by be totally excited and inspired by this particular one. A desire to provide passengers a “unique experience” led Finnair to pursue a collaboration with the much beloved Finnish design company Marimekko. Starting in the spring of 2013, Marimekko’s signature patterns will adorn the airline’s textiles and tableware, as well as the exterior of the planes themselves. You just have to love a company that proudly declares “Our goal is to become a design airline.” Looks like I’ve gotta figure out how to get myself to Helsinki so I can experience a style flight for myself!

Have a hankering to send Thanksgiving greetings – via the actual mail? Well, in support of the fine art of letter writing and the thrill generated when one receives a bonified letter (as opposed to a bill, catalog, or offer for 20% off your next plumbing crisis), I’m featuring an assortment of lovely autumnal stationery. Put a stamp on it! (as always, click to shop!)
I’m having a rather intense love affair with Pinterest. It’s become part of my daily decompression ritual. As soon as I get home from work (and get settled in to my flannels; that’s a given), I retreat to a cozy corner with my iPad and spend some time totally blissed-out; exploring the wealth of design inspiration pinned by amazing creative individuals and lovers of design. It was during one of those delicious sessions that I stumbled upon Eric Hibelot of L’Atelier des Garçons, a ceramics studio located in Saint Amand en Puisaye, a small village located in the east center of France. There, they create wonderfully simple artifacts that boast a playful combo of bold primaries and pattern. Wholly unexpected, unpretentious – and incredibly smile-inducing.
