A cautionary tale about dependence on technology. As we were waiting for our table at Red Rooster in Harlem, this music started playing that I simply had to own. Easy enough; out comes the iPhone and push of the Shazam button and… nothing. Thinking on my feet, I quickly downloaded the SoundHound app. Same results: “nothing found”. I was defeated… helpless… ready to surrender. Luckily, though, I was in the company of a friend much more clever than I, who suggested we simply ASK the DJ and write it down on a piece of paper. The fact that this painfully obvious alternate solution did not even cross my mind is hard evidence that one’s reliance on a smartphone can negatively impact one’s capacity for common sense. Feelin’ Who You Are by Peven Everett from the album of the same name, 2008. (I’ve included 2 versions – the original, and the almost instrumental dance track.)
